Students are able to visit the library on their own during recess, nutrition and lunch.
All of our elementary classes visit the library once a week.
The Collection
Lake Balboa College Preparatory Magnet has a collection of over 8,700 fiction and non-fiction titles in the library. The library media center recently received funds that made it possible to update our collection and technology.
Accelerated Reader
As of the 2020-2021 school year, the District has adopted the Renaissance Accelerated Reader as the District's main reading incentive program. This is how it works:
Students choose their own books to read based upon their reading level and reading interests.
Students read a chosen book and take an Accelerated Reader reading quiz on that book.
By how well they do on the quiz, each student earns a specific amount of points which they can apply towards their reading goal.
Accelerated Reader allows schools to create incentives based upon students meeting their goals both individually and as part of a class or grade level effort.
Students are then assessed again later in the school year. If students improve their reading level, then they begin to read text that is increasingly more textually complex.
The eventual goal of the Accelerated Reader program is not only to improve students' reading comprehension but also instill a lifelong love of reading.
