About the Library

The Lake Balboa College Preparatory Magnet has a collection of over 11,000 fiction and non-fiction titles. While the collection has been around a while, we just received $15,000 worth of new fiction titles the 2019-2020 school year.

As of the 2020-2021 school year, the District has adopted the Renaissance Accelerated Reader as the District's main reading incentive program.  This is how it works:
  1. Students begin the year by taking the Star Reading Test.
  2. After taking this test, teachers receive a reading equivalent score for each student.
  3. Teachers set individual goals for each student based upon each student's reading level.
  4. Students choose their own books to read based upon their reading level and reading interests.
  5. Students read a chosen book and take an Accelerated Reader reading quiz on that book.
  6. By how well they do on the quiz, each student earns a specific amount of points which they can apply towards their reading goal.
  7. Accelerated Reader allows schools to create incentives based upon students meeting their goals both individually and as part of a class or grade level effort.
  8. Students are then assessed again later in the school year.  If students improve their reading level, then they begin to read text that is increasingly more textually complex.
The eventual goal of the Accelerated Reader program is not only to improve students' reading comprehension but also instill a lifelong love of reading.
